Hangzhou, Monk Ji Gong Memorial
Another of the major attractions of the Tiger
Spring area is the Monk Ji Gong Tomb. Monk Ji, the crazy monk,
is part of popular culture in China.
The monk, who lived in the 12th century, used
to serve in Lingyin Temple. Although Monk Ji Gong had a kind
heart, he was kicked out of the temple because of his odd behavior
(he ate meat and drank wine). From then on, he roamed the streets
and helped people whenever he could. Through the cultivation
of the Buddha teachings, he acquired magical powers. After his
death he was revered as a deity.
The celebrated Buddhist monk is also known
as the Robin Hood
of
China.
