9/49.- Pittsburgh, Downtown in
front of the Wm. Penn Hotel
Behind Saks of Fifth Avenue looms the PPG building, that ostentatious
glass phenomenon Don't sneeze unless it cracks. All part of the Renaissance
of Pittsburgh. The economy of the city was based on its steel mills,
coal-mining and glassworks. Great for some, whose hands shone like
stainless steel as they hacked at the land for fortunes few others
would know. Not so great for the masses who had to inhale the pollution.
Pittsburgh became famous not just for its iron and steel, but for
its smog and fog. The Renaissance programme was engineered to clean
up the city and build, build, build. Saks is looking fine and dandy
with autumn trees reflected in its windows.
