4.- Pinar del Rio, The
valley of Isabel Maria.
Let's walk down
this winding road in the valley of Isabel Maria. The
valley is one of the most beautiful in the province but
the land is fortunate in that regard for there are many.
The foliage on the side of the road is 'Marabu' scrub.
Originally introduced by the Spaniards in the Colonial
Era, it was used as fencing but in recent decades there
has been a serious infestation problem in formerly
cultivated areas. It is tough and the three-inch thorns
make it difficult to remove. It does, however, make
excellent charcoal and is a source of cooking fuel.
