San Juan Chamula has been home to many rebellions. The first was in 1524 against the Spanish conquistadores, the most famous is the War of Casts in 1869, and the latest has been the Zapatista rebellion led by Subcomandnate Marcos (whose cloth tolls can be bought in the market).
