9.- Key West, Southernmost Point

Yes, there's the southernmost motel, restaurant, beer maker (Kelly's on Whitehead, with great sweet potato or bonito chips), hotel, and, of course, the Point. This is probably the second-most photographed place on the island (Mallory Square at sunset must be number one!). These are some of my students with Carlos, our great driver and guide. If you jumped into the water and swam along the shore about 500 meters, you 'd arrive at the Zachary Taylor Beach Park the cleanest and least crowded beach on Key West. There's sometimes a current, but the water stays clean. However, look out for alerts about the water's quality. (There are sometimes problems with the sewage disposal system!). You can also reach the beach by walking past the homes (timeshare condominiums) near Whitehead Street.
