20/29.- Black River tour, buying fish

Time to buy some fresh fish! On the way to Treasure Beach, we also met some nice fishermen. Our guide wanted to buy some fish. He asked a few of them how was their fishing going. After inspecting two or three boats, he decided this was the fish he was looking for.

Jamaicans speak English, but their native language is an African dialect called patois. Patois has some English, French and Spanish influences, but it is impossible to understand ---unless you speak the original African dialect. Sometimes it is even difficult to understand Jamaicans when they speak in English. Their slang is very peculiar. Jamaicans who work in tourist resorts do speak standard English, but the ones who do not have much contact with tourists have a strong accent.
