Charleston, Library
Shadows seem to paint pictures on the Charlestons library
walls and steps.
Charleston is about a two hour drive north of Hilton Head. Its
a place that you can visit and revisit and never become tired of.
This is just a tiny sampling of some of Charlestons highlights
but itll give you some kind of idea of what the city is like.
Charleston is named after King Charles. Charles Towne was settled
by the English along the nearby shores of Albermarle Point in 1670,
but then some ten years later the settlers relocated to its present
site. Charleston was made to survive. From Indian uprisings to epidemics
and the Civil War, Charleston has proven that charm and elegance can
indeed be the foundations for survival with dignity. For three years
Union ships battered the Confederate-occupied Fort Sumter. Never ones
to take a beating lying down, the Confederate submarine, the Hunley,
sank the USS Housatonic. But in the end, the Civil War came and went,
losers and winners one and all, yet Charleston never lost its magnificence
nor its charm.
