Hilton Head Island, General Mitchell
Whos this glum looking fellow? This is a painting of General
Mitchell who was the solemn commander of the Union troops on Hilton
Head Island during the Civil War in 1862. Imagine his expression if
he had lost! He even got a fort named after him, and that still didnt
make him happy. I took the photo at the Hilton Head Museum which is
located on the right just after you enter the island, next to the
Crazy Crab restaurant. The museum is great for children too, by the
way, with hands-on exhibits. Pick up tons of information
about restaurants, accommodations, etc. Hilton Head is a planned community.
For example, youll find Macdonalds here, but without the
yellow arches. Buildings tend to blend in very softly with the surrounding
landscape. Although this may be aesthetically pleasing, it can make
it difficult to find your whereabouts. There are mile markers along
the main road called highway 278 which might help to locate what youre
looking for. Of course, you could just follow the Jaguars, Mercedes
and BMWs and hope you end up where you want to go.
