Local people in the area are mostly black. They are of Afro-Caribbean descent. People speak English, Spanish and Patois. Patois is a dialect that mixes English, French, Spanish and African words.

In Puerto Viejo there is a distinctive culture. Rastafarianism, as in Jamaica, is the local religion here. Braids, peace, love and reggae music reign everywhere.
