The city became soon after, the first city and port of Brazil. And it grew thanks to the sugar and slave trades. Slaves were brought from Africa, because the converted Indians were not to be used as slaves.

Salvador was conquered by the Dutch in 1624, and was re-conquered by the Portuguese a year later. Salvador was the capital of Brazil till the 18th century, when the capital was moved to Rio de Janeiro.
