5/46.- Salvador da Bahia, Praça da Se

The city of Salvador da Bahia, locally known as Bahia, is quite big, but most of its tourist attractions are in its downtown.

This historical center is relatively small. To get to the center, I would recommend the taxi. Taxis are cheap, and safe. Just make sure the taxi driver resets the taximeter.

Salvador has a good network of public buses. There are two types of buses, the air-conditioned ones, which may be taken by tourists, and the non air-conditioned, which tourists should avoid, because they are considered unsafe. Even if you take one of the luxury buses, you should watch out for pickpockets.
