34/50.- Rio de Janeiro, Arcos da Lapa and Cathedral

In this picture you can see the Arcos da Lapa, and behind them, the new Cathedral of Rio.

The ultramodern Catedral Metropolitana was begun in 1964 and inaugurated in 1979. The building has a conical shape, is 96 meters high, and has capacity for more than 20,000 people. In front of the cathedral is a bell tower. It is possible to climb to the top of the bell tower, from where there is a great view of the city.

The cathedral is another of the symbols of Rio. The interior of this concrete cathedral is more beautiful than its exterior. The huge stained glass windows bring some warmth to this rather cold construction. If you are lucky, you may see a religious celebration. If this is the case keep quiet, and try not to disturb the parishioners.
