6/37.- Belem, old town building
In this picture you can see a detail of a building in the old town of Belem.
The best way to move around Belem is on foot, especially in the old town. We may have to take a taxi to visit some of the most distant sights, like the Botanical Garden and the Basilica of Nazareth. Buses are not recommended because of the pickpockets, mainly during the peak hours. As in the rest of the big cities in Brazil, in Belem there is a small safety problem. If we follow a few basic rules, we should be safe. During the day we should avoid non-tourist areas, and at night we should always take taxis. The safest area after dusk in Belem is the Estaçao das Docas, the docks area where the tourist restaurants are.
