Meknes, Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail
The mausoleum of Moulay Ismail dates from the 18th century.
Tourists can only visit this room. A room next to it, where
the Royal Tombs are, is reserved to Muslims. More rooms are
reserved to the Royal family.
Meknes sits on a plateau at the foothills of the Middle-Atlas
mountain range. Its climate is continental, but less extreme
than that of Fez. Even though it can be very hot in the summer
season. For this reason most of the monuments are closed at
noon, and reopen after two pm. If you come here in July or August
bring light clothes (bermudas and t shirts), sun glasses and
a cap may be useful too. Women should dress properly in order
to visit the holy sites.
