9/24.- Meknes, Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail
In this picture you can see the patio that leads to the shrine
of Moulay Ismail.
The son of Moulay Ismail, Moulay Abdallah, and his grandson,
Sidi Mohamed ben Abdallah, completed the construction of the
Imperial city. Unfortunately, in 1755, an earthquake destroyed
part of Ismail's dream. In the 19th century Meknes ceased to
be an imperial city, and fell into oblivion.
In the 20th century Meknes recovered part of its lost role
as one of the country's trade and business centers. Nowadays,
with almost half a million inhabitants, Meknes is the fifth
biggest city in Morocco.
