Marrakech, Bahia Palace, door
In the picture you can see one of the wooden doors in the Bahia
Palace.
Not far from this palace there is another attraction you should
not miss, the Saadian Tombs. Inside richly decorated rooms rest
in peace the bodies of some of the local Saadian Sultans. The
access to the Saadian Tombs is done through a narrow passageway.
The passageway is there in order for non Muslims not to step
in the Mosque -- only Muslims are allowed inside the mosques
in Morocco.
The Saadian tombs were commissioned by Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour
in the 16th century. More than 60 of his descendents were buried
there. The tombs were sealed in the 18th century by Sultan Moulay
Ismail. People of Marrakech forgot about the tombs until the
20th century. The tombs are the best preserved samples of the
architecture of its time, thanks to the fact that they were
closed for more than two centuries.
