26/50.- Luxor, Karnak Temple, colonnade
In this photo you can see a colonnade. There are three main
types of columns, inspired in three plants: the palm trees
(the oldest one), the papyrus (used in courtyards and temples) and
the lotus flower (used in domestic architecture). The ones in the photo, if I am not wrong, belong to the second class.
The oldest part of the temple is the holy of holies or sanctuary.
It lies behind the sixth pylon. The original sanctuary
was built by Tuthmosis III. The current sanctuary is a work
of the king of Macedonia Philip Arrhidaeus (323-316 BC), the
brother of Alexander the Great.
We will take a look at some of the statues in the temple and go
back to the city of Luxor.
