16/41.- Alexandria, Ras at Tin

Not far from the the citadel of Qaitbey, close to the Western harbor, sit some of the oldest tombs in Alexandria, the Anfushi Tombs.

The five Ptolemic tombs date from the first half of the 3rd century. The motifs of the tombs are a mixture of Greek and Egyptian styles. They were not discovered till 1901 and 1921 AD. The tombs are not very remarkable, only one or two are worth the effort of coming here. The tombs are some feet bellow the soil. To get there you have to go down a stairway, where a square courtyard gives access to two of the tombs. The rest of the tombs are in three other big holes. The tombs are painted to simulate alabaster and marble.
