6/41.- Alexandria, Cecil Hotel
In front of Saad Zaghlul square (in the left) sits one
of the most famous hotels in Alexandria: the Cecil Hotel. In
this hotel, inaugurated in 1930, stayed Winston
Churchill and Smerset Maugham.
Also one of its suites was permanently reserved for the British
secret service. As you can imagine this is not a cheap hotel. If you do not want to spend a lot, there are many cheap hotels
in this area.
Midan (=square) Saad Zaghlul was the setting of Lawrence
Durrell's Alexandria Quartet. Close to this square you
will find the famous Alexandria coffee houses, many cinemas,
restaurants and night spots. Now we will take one of the yellow
tramways to get to two beautiful mosques and to Gaitbey Fortress.
