Although there are two hotels in Abu Simbel, it is better to stay in a hotel in Aswan and book one of the day trips to Abu Simbel from there.
Hotels sell two diffferent tours to Abu Simbel, the long and the short one. The long tour visits Abu Simbel, and on the way back to Aswan it stops in the High Dam, the Philae Temple and the Unfinished Obelisk. The short trip "only" visits the Abu Simbel Temples. I recommend the long one.
As I told you, the tour starts first thing in the morning. You'd better ask your hotel to prepare a take away breakfast. If you want to do the long trip, you should also bring a sandwich for lunch.
