3/23.- Warsaw, Old houses of the market square

Until the end of eighteenth century the houses in Warsaw did not have any numbers. In order to distinguish one from another, they were given names. Sometimes it was the name of the owner, usually, it was a name of something special connected with the house. The house in front of us is known as “The House Under the Negro”. It’s because of the head of a small black boy, which is carved right next to the entrance.

The first owner of this house was an Italian tradesman from Venice, who imported spices from the Mediterranean countries. To show to everyone that he deals with faraway countries, he ordered a head of a Negro to be carved on the front wall of his house.

Now let’s stroll along the narrow roads of the Old Town.
