30/43.- Vienna, Plague Column

Menu

You can see here the Plague Column. Many other columns like this where erected all over Austria after this one. The purpose of these columns was to celebrate the end of an epidemic plague (yes, that is where the name of the column comes from). In 1679 a wooden column was erected right here, it was replaced some years after (1693) by the one you are currently seeing. Many local artists took part in the erection of this column, like P. Strudel, L.O. Burnacini and F von Erlach.

Well, it’s time to leave the city center. We’ll now take the underground (U-Bahn) and visit the Schönbrun Palace.
