Displaying the features of local art from Maramures on the wooden portal of the church in Budesti-Josani are carved ancient solar symbols, rosettes, Christian crosses and the relief rope which is considered by specialists to represent the snake as a protector of the sacred room. It's about time to discuss what would the church represent for traditional communities. Churches have always been the place where people gathered for prayers, and also the place where the village wise men were meeting to make decisions in hard times. From the church tower enemies could be watched, and the church bell would warn people about fires, floods or other misfortunes coming upon the village. The dead were buried around the church according to hierarchies settled by customs; the church preserved the holy books, manuscripts, icons of great spiritual and artistic value, battle flags, bride grooms crowns and heroes crowns. It was in the church where babies were baptized and weddings were performed, mourning and other rituals were carried out. Some Maramures villages have two parishes with the respective church which is identified by the location within the village, the upper-dwellers or Susani in Romanian and the lower-dwellers called Josani as in the case of the village of Budesti which has two parishes and two churches, this one being located in the lower part, that's why it is called Budesti-Josani.
