8/27.- Zealand, Neeltje Jans

In 1953, Large parts of Holland situated below sea level were flooded when an unfortunate combination of storm and high tides caused the sea to break through the dikes. Ever since, a major project known by the name of Delta Plan has sought to secure the country, by means of barriers which can be closed against rising tides. The province of Zealand being entirely made up of islands and peninsulas crisscrossed by rivers, the Scheldt only one of them, it has been graced with many spectacular barrages and bridges.
