Bolsena lake is an ancient volcanic crater filled with water. The lakeside village of Bolsena is famous for the « Bolsena Miracle » in which a host started bleeding to convince a doubting priest of the reality of transsubstantiation in the Eucharist ; but today it has become a popular tourist resort with several four-star hotels and avenues lined with hydrangeas, celebrated in an annual contest.
