6/50.- Umbria, Orvieto, Cathedral

The colourful mosaics, some of them set against a golden background, represent scriptural scenes like the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist, or non-scriptural scenes belonging to the Roman Catholic tradition like the birth and crowning of the Virgin Mary. A number of bronze sculptures have been removed and placed in the museum next door to the Cathedral, while others, like the statues representing the Holy Lamb or the four Evangelists, still adorn the Cathedral’s facade.
