Piazza del Campo is the main square in Siena. The Piazza, shaped like a shell, is where the historical horse race of Palio takes place twice a year, on July the 2nd and August the 16th.
The Palio competition consists of a confrontation between the 17 contrades, or city neighborhoods, of Siena. Participants are dressed in medieval clothes with distinctive colors. Races are pretty wild, and often some of the horses, and sometime the riders themselves, end up injured. The Palio is one of the biggest festivals that takes places in Italy. If you have the chance, do not miss it.
