6/24.- Siena, Via Banchi di Sotto, Il Campo
Through this arcade you can see the first glimpse of the Piazza del Campo. The building you see is the Palazzo Pubblico.
Although the legend says that the city of Siena was founded by Senius, son of Remus (brother of Romulus, both the mythological founders of Rome), the city first inhabitants were the Etruscans (900 BC to 400 BC). It was Roman emperor Augustus who founded a town called Saena Julia here. But the city did not prosper till the Lombards invaded it and a new road connecting Rome and the Northern territories that passed through Siena was built.
