
Buyukada has many churches, mosques, a synagogue, a famous 12th c monastery, St. George, along with the wooden mansions built in the 19th c by Greek bankers for a summer retreat. It is known for being a place where people came into exile.
Leon Trotsky stayed on the island for four years, time he spent writing "The History of the Russian Revolution". Wandering around the commercial area of the island nothing impressed me more than the freshness of the fruits and vegetables sold in its small market shops (shown here in an outdoor stand with fresh produce).
