And here we come to perhaps the most amazing item in the whole museum, the "Mask of Agamemnon," a gold death mask of some royal personage dating to about 1500 BCE. When Schliemann found it, he assumed it was the mask of the famous King Agamemnon, but scholars think it is too old to belong to Agamemnon. Nevertheless the name has stuck. It's hard to imagine that this is a thousand years older than items from classical Greece, and 1500 years older than most Roman artifacts!
