Jumping ahead about a thousand years, we come to the museum's Mycenaean collection, one of the major highlights.
From about 1600 to 1100 BCE, Mycenaean civilization dominated southern Greece. The Trojan War likely took place in Mycenaean times, and the 19th-century excavations by archeologist Heinrich Schliemann at the site of Mycenae are among the most important in Greece. Indeed, much of the museum's collection comes from Schliemann's excavations.
