The Jewish presence in Crete is very ancient and dates back to the 4th century BC. On Crete there were once many synagogues Iraklio had three, Rethymnon one and Candia two after the 17th century.

The synagogue of Etz Hayyim pictured here dates from 15th century being the oldest surviving and functioning synagogue in Greece along with that of Rhodes.
