The Cinquantenaire Arch was built in 1880 to commemorate the 50 years of independence of the Belgian state. It was the scene of the 1935 World Fair, and the buildings around it, including some impressive cast-iron halls, still host several museums - Arts and History (with renowned Egyptian, Greek and Roman collections), Army and Military History (including a hall with tanks and airplanes), History of the Automobile, and a facility where works of art are analysed and restored.
