10/36.- Breton Church Enclosures, Saint Thégonnec Ossuary
Since the churchyards were limited spaces, they could contain only a limited number of graves, and sometimes corpses had to be unearthed to make room for new arrivals. The remaining bones would be stored in niches in a special building called Ossuary. The ossuaries were also richly decorated with stone sculptures on the outside, and polychrome (painted) wooden sculptures inside. Now that the practice of unearthing the remains has disappeared, the ossuaries of the church enclosures have become museums and/or souvenir shops.
