Slovakia was under Hungarys domination for more than 1000 years, this domination left its fingerprints in the local cuisine: Spicy Gulas, paprika and fine wines, are the dominant elements in the local food. Slovakias national dish, "bryndzove halusky", are heavy dumplings with a thick sauce of goat cheese (not for sensitive stomachs, I can assure you!). Other typical dishes are: "pirohy" (a pasta pocket with potato) and "pstruh" (trout)
