One of the main reasons to visit Naples is Mount Vesuvius, which in its 79 AD eruption buried the Roman city of Herculaneum (Ercolano) in mud and its neighbor Pompeii (Pompei) in ashes. The excavations, which began in 1784, show us a picture of the Roman daily life. To get there you have to take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to "Pompeii Scavi" station. In the Pompeii’s Archeological site you’ll find the colonnaded Forum, the Forum Baths, the frescoed houses, the basilica (law court), the Amphitheater, the House of the Vetti (with its impressive frescoes and its even more impressive Priapus’ phalli), the small brothels and the city's wide roads. 500 meters downhill you’ll find Herculaneum, where you’ll find better preserved Roman typical houses.
