One of the main reasons to visit Naples is Mount Vesuvius, which in its 79 AD eruption buried the Roman city of Herculaneum (Ercolano) in mud and its neighbor Pompeii (Pompei) in ashes. The excavations, which began in 1784, show us a picture of the Roman daily life. To get there you have to take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to "Pompeii Scavi" station. In the Pompeiis Archeological site youll find the colonnaded Forum, the Forum Baths, the frescoed houses, the basilica (law court), the Amphitheater, the House of the Vetti (with its impressive frescoes and its even more impressive Priapus phalli), the small brothels and the city's wide roads. 500 meters downhill youll find Herculaneum, where youll find better preserved Roman typical houses.
