23/40.- King Ramkamhaeng Monument, Sukhothai

King Ramkamhaeng was Sukhothai's most famous king, ruling from 1277 to 1317. Among other things, he's credited with the development of the Thai language, the firm establishment of Buddhism as the state religion, and the dramatic expansion of the Kingdom.

Here we see a monument to the king, consisting of a statue surrounded by bronze reliefs depicting various events in the king's life. Also present is a copy of the famous "Ramkamhaeng stele" a block of stone with inscriptions that allegedly are the oldest known example of Thai writing. From the monument, there are also nice views out over a lake, to the mountains in the distance. Let's take a little break and head into town...
