The heart of ancient Samarkand is Registan Square (Registan means "sandy place").
The square is fringed on three sides by the monumental structures of the Ulugbek, Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kari madrasahs. Madrasah means a religious school. Till the very end of the 19 century the square served as a market place.
