16/50.- Kota Kinabalu, Mount Kinabalu

In the background you can see Mount Kinabalu, a World Heritage Site, and one of the main reasons for visiting KK. With more than 4,000 meters (13,500 feet), this is the tallest mountain in Borneo.

If you are moderately fit, you can book an excursion to the top in any of KK's travel agencies. The climb usually lasts a couple of days. The second day trekkers wake up around three in the morning in order to get to the summit before the sun rises. Note that booking well in advance is always necessary (up to three months ahead!)

Even if you do not want to climb Mount Kinabalu, I recommend visiting Kinabalu's National Park. In the area you will find jungle trails, a Botanical Garden and a park museum.

The park is around two hours from KK. Overnighting in the area is necessary.
