In this picture shot from a road you can see the Siq that leads to Petra. As you can imagine, the city was not easy to find.
The ruins remained hidden to the western world for many centuries. In 1812, Swiss explorer Johan Ludwig Burckhardt, disguised as a Bedouin, found the way. In 1929 the first official excavations of the archeological site began.
