 
       All divers in the Gili Islands have to pay a tax to support the Gili Eco Trust, an association created in 2002 by all local dive centers in order to protect the coral reefs.
One of the projects of the Gili Eco Trust is Biorock, which consists of submerging metal structures crossed by a low voltage electric current. Electricity helps the corals grow faster by increasing the calcareous precipitation. Currently there are more than sixty of these structures in the area.
