The history of Ubud begins in the eighth century, when Rsi Mrkendya, a Javanese Hindu priest, came to meditate to Bali and founded the Gunung Lebah Temple in the area. During the following centuries many more temples were built in the region, and the Royal family established itself in Ubud.
The tourist fame of Ubud starts in the 1930's, when local artisans called the attention of some European intellectuals. In the 1960's the first tourists came to Ubud. Since then, the town has been the center of Balinese art and culture.
