The beach and the waters of Varkala are also considered holy by Hindus. The town is sometimes called the Varanasi of the South.

In the morning, you will find several holy man with their huts on the main beach. People from the region come to them to perform religious ceremonies (Pujas). Most of the sadhus (holy man) speak only the local language, Malayalam, but if you want to get advice from them, you can ask if they can speak English.
