You can get to the synagogue on a rickshaw or on a taxi from Fort Kochi. Ask one of the drivers you will find in the tourist town to take you on a city tour. For a fixed price, the driver will take you to the city's tourist attractions. If you ask him, he can take you to a local restaurant, where you can have the, exceptionally cheap, authentic local food.
