15/50.- New York, UN Building

In this picture you see the United Nations Secretariat building, the headquarters of this institution. The United Nations Organization was founded on October 24, 1945, and originally had 51 members. Nowadays almost all nations on earth are members.

The aim of this organization is to promote world peace and economic prosperity. The countries that form the Security Council decide when and where to use the money collected from the member states.

The offices of this organization were built on a plot of land donated to the city by John D. Rockefeller. The 154m (505 ft) tall Secretariat building was completed in 1952. Currently, as the institution itself, the building needs major repairs and updates.

Someone called my attention to the fact that the area where the UN has its offices is not part of the United States, but an International Zone with its own security.
