In this picture you can see the São Bento Monastery. In the place where Largo de São Bento now sits used to be the settling of the local Indigenous people (Tibiraçá) back in the 16th century. In the 17th century the Benedictines constructed the Mosteiro de São Bento dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção (which is the actual name of the church). At the end of the 19th century the area was remodeled, and the monastery destroyed. A new, and bigger, monastery was completed in 1922. Every Sunday at 10 a mass with nice Gregorian Chants is celebrated.
The area of São Bento is home of the São Bento Metro Station, and can be reached on foot from downtown.
