16/50.- Cairo, cemetery

Close to the Blue Mosque there is this cemetery. Cemeteries have a different meaning in Egypt. Since the pharaohs times, graveyards have not only been the place for the deaths. It is a tradition to visit this places on holidays. Many families have a small room where they can spend the night close to their relatives' graves. And for more than five centuries local homeless have used these rooms to live.

The most famous cemetery in Cairo is the North cemetery, where thousands of locals live. They have electricity, water and gas. There's even a post office there!
