We are now standing in front of the Royal Castle. At first it was a castle of the dukes of Masovia (Masovia is the province, of which Warsaw is the capital). Later on, when Masovia became a part of Poland, and after the capital was moved to Warsaw (that was at the end of sixteenth century), this became the Royal Castle.
The first king who lived here - Sigismundus III - rebuilt the castle in baroque style, which you can see today (this is a very rare type of baroque with little decorations outside but tremendous interior). This building served not only as an official residence of the monarch, but it was the house of the parliament for several hundred of years.
