Wallonia: Coron (Miners' Housing)
At the time when demand for coal was high, the mines called
for a large
work force. Labourers were called in from Southern Europe and
accommodated
in long rows of small miners' houses, rent for which was often
levied from
their wages. Today many of these row houses are left to crumble,
while
others have been overhauled and turned into cheap housing or
council flats.
