5/30.- Chateau of
Versailles, State apartments, pictures
The State Apartments were built to glorify Louis
XIV, the Sun King. A big hall --the Abundance Salon --
leads to four smaller rooms dedicated to the mythological
gods of Venus, Diana, Mars, Mercury, and Apollo.
Charles Le Brun directed the decoration of the
rooms in the New Palace. He led a team of artists of the
Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture who decorated the
room ceilings. In these rooms there are also some works
of art by famous contemporary artists, like Veronese's
"Christ at Supper with Simon" and François
Lemoyne's "Apotheosis of Hercules".
